Planet scanning makes me want to drink Dran-O - download One Probe, All Resources mod to torpedo this garbage idea into smithereens, permanently. Squad leveling is nowhere near as engaging or interesting - there's very little choice in how to shape them. Squad mates are still incredibly dumb and will not follow orders, which will get you killed multiple times.
Gameplay is dumbed down to a point where it's little more than a third person shooter, particularly at the beginning of the game. The story, while well told with excellent voice acting and line-to-line script, is almost completely inconsequential to the trilogy arc. All of the RPG meat and potatoes of the first game are completely ripped out, leaving nothing but a third-person action game with minor upgrade mechanics in its wake.
